About Montgomery Township

History

Montgomery Township is located in central New Jersey approximately 60 minutes from New York City, 90 minutes from Philadelphia and 15 minutes from Princeton, and is in close proximity to the academic communities of Princeton University, Rutgers University, Rider University, The College of New Jersey and several community colleges.

Montgomery is a thriving community with a rich history, excellent schools, diverse recreation opportunities and a collective commitment to preserving open land and protecting natural resources. The community has successfully merged rural and suburban lifestyles in a cosmopolitan region. According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau estimates available for 2007, there are approximately 23,023 people who call Montgomery home.

Established in 1702 by Dutch and English Settlers, Montgomery Township continues to combine a unique convenience of location with the lifestyle features sought by residents and businesses. Located in the southern portion of Somerset County – six miles from Princeton University and roughly half way between New York City and Philadelphia – the Township is an historic 32 square mile community with an agricultural heritage.

Neighborhoods

Originally a farming community dating back to colonial times, Montgomery Township has evolved into a primarily residential community while retaining large tracts of open spaces and "Green Acres." There are several hamlets within the Township: Blawenburg, Harlingen, Belle Mead, Skillman, Dutchtown, and Zion. Rocky Hill, which was the first village in the Township, is now a separately incorporated borough, whose children attend Montgomery Township schools.

Recreation Programs

Montgomery Recreation serves a variety of ages and provides programs and activities of interest to our residents. Some of the various programs are listed below.

Community School

Our Community School provides educational, health and well-being classes as well as classes in music and the arts. We run sessions in the Fall, Winter and Spring, and sessions can vary in length from a few days to eight to ten weeks. All of our Community School classes are self-sustaining and all participants pay a fee for participation.

Coordination with Independent Sports Leagues, Township-Owned Sports Fields -

The following is a list of independent sport league organizations:
Montgomery Youth Baseball & Little League, Montgomery Girls Softball, Montgomery Recreation Soccer, Montgomery Youth Basketball, Montgomery Boys/Girls Lacrosse and Montgomery Wrestling.

Summer Camp Program

We provide an extensive Summer Camp Program at a nominal fee. We offer Pre- and Post-Camp hours to working parents. Our Summer Camps are self-sustaining, and provide a balance of activities from trips, games, crafts, sports, awards, camp-outs, dances, barbecues and much more.

Senior Citizens

The Montgomery Senior Center is operated through a partnership between Montgomery Township and the Somerset County Office on Aging. The center, which offers a wide array of programs and activities for those 60 years of age and older, including lunch, is open Monday through Friday 9 - 1. Montgomery Township covers building operations, Transportation and subsidizes many of the center's activities. Somerset County provides meals and staff.
